New Entry Door

We got a new front door.  It was time.  We said good riddance goodbye to the very old, falling apart green door and replaced it with something new and pretty.  The old door was made of wood and had pieces that had broken off and were carelessly patched so when the wind blew, the door became an instrument suitable for the woodwind section of the orchestra.  It also occasionally sounded like an elephant trumpeting.  Not kidding.  The old door frame also had problems, in particular the metal flange around the jamb.  It was bent in several places and most notably right near the deadbolt lock.  Every time someone would go in or out of the door it would make a loud, gouging noise.  Lovely.

Tired of this and of paying to heat not only our home but some of the great outdoors we went shopping and specced out a new entry door and ventilating storm door.  I learned that something as simple as replacing the front door entails many more decisions than I anticipated.  Seriously.

We selected a Masonite fiberglass, cherry stained, oak textured, fan-lite glass with antique black caming.  What is caming, you ask? I had never heard of it either.  It's the metal strips that bind pieces of glass together in a window or door. We also added a knocker and peep hole.  So excited to have this!  Now I can see who is at the door before opening it.  Our new storm door is fantastic, it ventilates!  Our front door faces West and in the summer a lot of heat builds up between the entry door and the storm door in the afternoon.  This new storm door has a built in screen that pulls down to allow air to circulate between the two doors and in the spring or fall on more temperate days we can open the entry door and allow for a breeze to circulate throughout the mid-level of the house while keeping out bugs.  Once all the design decisions were made and we had a quote in hand we then had to jump through all the paperwork hoops with the Homeowners Association to get our selection approved.  Two weeks later we received approval and we placed the order (just days before heading to Wisconsin for Thanksgiving).  The completed custom door (I guess we're just not the buy it off the rack types when it comes to home renovations) was installed a few days before Christmas.  Merry Christmas to us!

It's so quiet and functions perfectly.  I love it!
